UmberEvery tree in fall is like a paintbrush,Umber by PackRatTheArtist
Loaded with bright, yellow paint.
They cast their crimson shadows on the river,
Making the waters blush.
Their fragile leaves blown about
Precariously on the tips of their fingers.
Floating across the wind, frozen in time.
Like little scraps of crinkled canvas.
Like masterpieces cast carelessly in the air.
That precious skim of green on the edges of the bristles
Betrays their desperate cling to life.
They gaze up to the mountains
At the ever-living pines,
Who will never get to taste death.
And a death so beautiful
So as to paint the valleys
With their passionate colors.
To fill the air with their burnt scents.
To display themselves vividly and boldly
Against the cloudy grey sky,
In a violent opposition to winter.
Would it be pretentious of me
To say that I feel like the fall?
To feel, with all the color and blessings,
Cold and fragile?
Would it be too audacious of me,
To say that in the summer of my youth,
I feel old?
That I could rain and storm
